About Me:
I’m Kat Wilson. I live for the creative life. Documenting, dreaming, making weird stuff happen. I was once called the Brad Pitt of lesbians, but these days I’m more like the Matthew McConaughey of photography. I’ll take it. My retirement plan includes a telescope, a sailboat, and a floating light sculpture built with my true love. I haven’t photographed a UFO yet. But I’m trying.
My photography career took off when Communication Arts featured my work at age 25. Since then, my images have appeared in National Geographic, Oxford American, The Momentary, and a long list of catalogs, campaigns, and covers. My portrait series Habitats has been exhibited across the country, including at Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art next to works by Georgia O’Keeffe and Andy Warhol. My Layers series even made it to the Louvre. I’m also the creator of #SelfieThrone, a participatory photo installation that plays with art, ego, and party. It’s shown up at major art institutions, music festivals, and anywhere people love a little spectacle. You can see the full ride at katwilsonartist.com.
Off-camera, I’m an adventure mom to a giant little boy who keeps life wild and hilarious. I’m also deep into social media. I consult on it, and I share my own world too. Shoots, road trips, and behind-the-scenes chaos. My girlfriend, who I’ve known since the ’90s, is an art appraiser and historic preservationist. We live surrounded by old things, wild stories, and beautiful images. My nephews often work as my assistants, following me around like Michonne’s zombies from The Walking Dead.
I work all over Arkansas and anywhere else a good story needs telling.
That’s me flying the drone. My family’s down there—we escaped to a remote cabin in the Ozarks to catch the 2024 eclipse in full totality. No signal, just stars and snacks. I’m a queer adventure mom and a professional photographer in the business of high-end imagery.
